EdUHK and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Held Collaborative Exchange on Teacher’s GenAI Competency and Professional Learning System Development

On the first week of February, a delegation of experts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) visited the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) for a four-day academic exchange. The SJTU delegation consists of Professor KONG Linghe, a Changjiang Scholar and an IEEE Fellow from the School of Computer Science; and Dr LEI Jiale, Assistant Research Fellow from the School of International and Public Affairs. The visit sought to enhance collaborative efforts within the project University Teacher Artificial Intelligence (AI) Competency Model and Professional Learning System for EdUHK and Beyond (the EdUHK-SJTU Project), a shared commitment by the two higher education institutions to advancing teacher professional development in the era of GenAI.

Prof. YAN Zi, Head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I), and Prof. LIM Cher Ping, Chair Professor of Learning Technologies and Innovation and Co-Director of Global Institute for Emerging Technologies (GIET), welcomed the delegation group. The visit was also joined by other EdUHK-SJTU project team members from EdUHK, including Dr ZHU Jinxin, Dr BA Shen, Dr HUANG Lingyun, and Dr KONG Suet Yee Suria from C&I, as well as Dr. CHENG Kwok Shing Gary and Dr SUN Daner from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology.

During the visit, the EdUHK team and SJTU delegations reviewed milestone achievements and expressed a shared commitment to further collaborations, in particular on developing a professional learning platform to enhance the university teacher’s GenAI competency. A series of meetings followed up with a focus on the platform’s interface design and strategic planning, with experts from both sides actively exchanged insights.

Another highlight of the visit has been the 7th event of the Learning Innovations and Emerging Technologies Masterclass Series entitled “AI-enabled Examination System.” Co-hosted by C&I and GIET Equity team at EdUHK and the School of Computer Science at SJTU, the event brought together around 60 staff and students to join the face-to-face session. Prof. KONG introduced an intelligent platform for leveled assessment (智能化分類分級考試平台) and how it empowered an interdisciplinary, agent-based ecosystem for monitoring and evaluation. Dr LEI followed the thread and elaborated a risk control model for high-stake formal exam, highlighting the impact of AI-integrated methodologies on educational equity and efficiency. Dr ZHAN Ying, Associate Professor at C&I, moderated the event.

The SJTU delegation also visited the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC). The LTTC team introduced the Centre’s vision and mission, recent initiatives, and further showcased a range of campus-based courses and learning resources of Metaverse, LLMs, and Robot, designed to support teachers and students’ learning.

SJTU’s visit reinforced the collaborative relationship with EdUHK and underscored the mutual dedication to promoting GenAI-responsive competency for university teachers.
